The Myopia Hunt welcomes all enthusiasts to participate as Subscribers, Patrons, and Cappers, and to enjoy the sport by following the hunt.
We hunt at the courtesy of our Landowners, who invite the hunt to use their fields and trails, and often allow us to place fences for the horses to jump. We work closely with our local Land Conservation organizations, and proceeds from our annual events help support their efforts.
Subscribers are members of the hunt who may ride in all meets and participate in all activities and events. Patrons support the hunt, but do not ride. They participate in all activities and events.
Cappers are non-subscribers who ride in the hunt. They pay a Capping Fee for each hunt, and may hunt up to three times during the Cubbing and Formal Seasons. There is no Capping Fee during Roading. All are welcome and encouraged to join us.
Our season includes:
- Spring Roading - Late April through May
- Summer Hound Exercise - June through First Half August
- Fall Roading - Last Half August
- Cubbing - September
- Formal Season - October through November
We meet on Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Roading introduces hounds, riders, and horses to the Hunt at a quieter pace. A scent is not laid for the hounds during Roading. Summer Hound Exercise focuses on continued training of the hounds. Both Roading and Summer Hound Exercise offer a good opportunity for building fitness of horse and rider, and for the introduction and training of inexperienced horses and riders.
During Cubbing and Formal Season, a scent is laid. Ratcatcher Attire is worn during Roading and Cubbing. Hounds, riders, and horses are still improving their fitness for the Formal Hunting Season, when the hunts are longer and faster. Formal Attire is worn during the Formal Season.
There are three fields, two Jumping Fields, and a Hilltopping Field for those who desire an opportunity to view the hounds at a slower pace and without jumping.
Roading begins at the Myopia Kennel. A Fixture Card is prepared each month for Cubbing and the Formal Season, which lists the location of each meet. We begin at many different locations throughout the fall.
The Myopia Hunt also offers meets dedicated to Juniors during all seasons. These meets begin at the Myopia Kennel on selected Fridays and Sundays. The Juniors ride at the front of the Hunt and are assigned the roles of Field Master and Whippers-in. Adults on quiet horses are welcome to ride behind the Juniors.
We encourage you to participate in this wonderful sport, and to honor and perpetuate the Myopia Hunt traditions which have existed since 1882.
Any member of the Hunt Committee will be happy to assist you and to answer any questions you may have about dress, your horse, protocol in the Hunt Field, or any other topic.
We are happy to have you with us and look forward to having you join us often!
